Week 9 - Post 1

The three solutions to improve how we look at life’s challenges are making a distinction between work and play, your attitude, and that joy and pain are often found in the same place and should both be valued. As I read more into the first solution from chapter seven regarding the distinction that should be made between work and play, I took a step back and looked at how I’ve made that distinction in my life. Not only can I apply that to the jobs I’ve held during school, but I can also apply it to the position that I hold in my sorority. I feel that in order to get that “play” time, I need to work hard. I use the mindless things I do as a reward for accomplishing something, which alleviates a lot of stress. The second solution is our attitudes, or how Abigail puts it, “it isn’t our actual experiences, but what we make of them”. I am a firm believer that positivity will get you far. I have found that if I have a more positive outlook on, for instance, doing an essay, I will finish it faster and have a greater sense of accomplishment afterwards. The third solution is the integration of joy and pain. I can apply this solution when doing a project for example. Although it’s hard work and can potentially be a struggle getting everything together, when the final product comes out, I will feel joyous that I have finally finished and that my hard work paid off.

  1. Hey,

I just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed reading your post on how you apply the three solutions to life’s challenges. I can see that you are able to distinct work from play, and I feel that this is an important aspect. I also agree that having a positive mentality is key. I believe that you could make any situation positive and this makes a big difference on your happiness. Being able to think positive will help you to not dwell on the negativity and be able to be happy with your life. Overall, great job California girl!

  2. California Girl,
What struck me in your post, was when you said when you have positive outlook on things, such as school essays you finish them faster. I could not agree with that more. I have a class that I have to do a discussion in every week and every week I put it off till the last minute and it takes me three times as long because I dread the class itself. However, when I write an essay in my child development class I find it more as a hobby, because I love children so researching about them, I am able to get a better understanding of them. In the end, the reward of finishing that specific assignment always feels so liberating and that alone is the joy I feel, and suffer through the pain of all the research. I also agree with you that positivity will get your far in life. Not only in your career, but especially in your friendships. Your energy rubs off on people and people will want to be around you.

  3. Hey California Girl!
I absolutely loved your post and I relate so much to what you said not only about always having a positive outlook on life but also the saying that hard work pays off; I am a firm beliver in that statement and model my life after that as well. Life would not be what it is worth if we did not have road blocks and obstacles that we have to face in order to achieve what we desire. Furthermore I believe that life is too short to let the small things get us down and we have to use our strength and positivity to move past those things and rise above them otherwise we would not see the beauty and joy in the good times life has to offer. Great post!!
