Week 7 - Post 2

Power is the ability to influence or control events. You can use power to control people in order to control events as well. Sometimes, power is like taking advantage or someone or something. When I think of power, I think of people in high positions in their careers, such as CEOs, owners, CFOs, etc. When I think of a situation of my own where an unbalanced power relationship was present, I think of my current situation in my sorority. We have positions that girls can apply for and hold for a calendar year. There are positions that are on the executive board, which obviously have more power, smaller positions that are not on the executive board, and the president, who has ultimate power. My position is Director of Scholarship, so I have power over the sisters who are on our academic probation program. I direct and monitor them weekly, so I use my power to better my sisters, which is why I love that power. Although, compared to the president, I have less power, therefore she can make decisions that I can no control over. Less power doesn’t bother me in this situation at all.
